Brand new goalie? lets look at where we need to start
The reverse-VH is a tool, not a default. Used correctly it seals the short side and gives the goaltender a strong platform to attack a walk-out. Used automatically it removes mobility exactly when a goaltender needs it most.
Start with the read: puck below the goal line and tight to the post, or a sharp-angle shooter with no immediate cross-ice threat. Anything wider than that and an overlap or standing post integration is usually the better answer.
Mechanically, the loaded leg must be able to drive out of a deep hip position. If a goaltender lacks internal rotation range, the RVH becomes a trap — they get in, but they cannot get out. That is why mobility work sits upstream of the tactic itself.
Train it in blocks: entry from a controlled slide, seal and hold, then explosive exit to a second contact. Reps should always finish with a movement, never with a static pose.
